One thing’s for sure…the staffing industry is strong, and growing more robust each year.
America’s staffing companies employed an average of 2.96 million temporary and contract
workers per day in 2006 more than in any other year according to the American Staffing
Association quarterly employment and sales survey. U.S. temporary and contract staffing
sales for 2006 totaled $72.3 billion, a growth of $2.8 billion over the previous year, setting
a new record high.1
Even more impressive than last year’s numbers is the outlook for the future. According to
the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job openings rate for December 2006 was up by
3.2 percent, the highest rate since February 2001. This increase results in a tighter job
market, which is positive news for staffing firms since companies turn to them when they
have difficulty finding qualified candidates on their own. And the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics estimates that the U.S. staffing industry will grow faster and add more new jobs
than just about any other industry over the next decade.2
According to the American Association of Personnel Services, the average daily employment
for temporary help services has increased at an average rate of 10 percent per year over the
past seven years with 90 percent of companies using temporary help services. What accounts
for the growth of the industry? America’s workforce is changing as more and more people
are looking for the flexibility that temporary work provides. And companies are tapping into
the flexible labor market to keep fully staffed during busy times.3
The staffing industry has been growing faster than the economy because of flexibility:
Workers want it, businesses need it, and it’s good for the economy.4 And, as a
